Red vs Brown Switches Explained: Linear or Tactile?

Red and brown switches look identical on paper, same travel and close actuation force, but they feel completely different to type on. Here is why.

Red vs brown switches explained in one sentence: reds are linear (smooth, no feedback), browns are tactile (small bump when the key registers). The specs: almost identical, meaningfully different

Start with the numbers, because they’re surprisingly close.

Same pre-travel. Same total travel. CHERRY lists the same operating force for both; tactile peak force is a separate specification. On a spreadsheet they look like cousins. Under your fingers they feel like different instruments.

The distinction is the shape of resistance through the stroke. A red has no deliberate bump; a brown has a tactile event without a deliberate click. Bump position and electrical actuation are separate characteristics.

The bump on a brown is subtle. That’s a feature and a criticism, depending on who you ask.

How they actually feel to type on

Reds feel effortless. The 45 cN actuation is light enough that you can rest fingers on the keys without accidental presses, but it’s not hair-trigger. The linear stroke means there’s no sensation telling you the key fired — you either learn to trust that you’ve pressed far enough, develop a light touch and stop before bottom-out, or bottom out every keystroke and use the physical stop as your feedback. Most typists bottom out. That’s fine; the sound is still quieter than clicky switches, and the feel is smooth rather than jarring.

Browns give you a reference point. When the bump breaks over, you know the key registered. In theory this lets you release earlier, avoid re-activating the switch before the reset point, and type faster with less wasted travel. In practice, Corsair’s switch guide notes that getting value from tactile feedback requires training yourself to stop before bottom-out — something most typists don’t do without deliberate practice.

The honest hobby criticism of browns: the bump is too small. Cherry MX Browns have one of the gentlest tactile events in the market. Compared to a Boba U4T, an Glorious Panda, or even a Topre dome, the brown bump is easy to miss at speed. This is why experienced keyboard hobbyists sometimes call MX Browns “a linear with a gritty spot” rather than a real tactile. That’s uncharitable, but it points at something real — if you want tactile feedback that actually changes how you type, you may outgrow browns quickly.

Gaming: reds are the standard, browns aren’t wrong

For gaming, reds dominate because the linear stroke gives you fast, repeatable keypresses without the bump interrupting your inputs. Rapid-fire or held inputs feel cleaner. The light 45 cN actuation also means less fatigue on WASD-heavy sessions.

Both switches can be used for gaming. The manufacturer’s matching pre-travel specifications do not establish a timing advantage for either one. If you prefer Brown’s feedback for typing, check the rest of the board’s specifications before assuming a separate gaming switch is needed.

Typing and long-session work: browns edge out, reds hold their own

For extended typing — long documents, code, anything requiring sustained attention — tactile feedback reduces cognitive load. You don’t have to consciously register whether a key fired; the bump tells you. This matters more over hours than it does in a 10-minute session.

That said, experienced touch-typists often find they adapt to linear switches without much difficulty. If you already type accurately, the red’s smooth stroke may feel liberating rather than disorienting. Browns win on paper for typing. In practice, the gap is smaller than switch marketing implies.

Which one to buy

Pick reds if:

  • You game more than you type, or do both equally
  • You prefer a light, consistent keystroke with no interruption
  • You’ve tried tactile switches before and the bump annoyed you more than it helped

Pick browns if:

  • You type more than you game, or want one switch for everything
  • You want some tactile feedback without the noise of a clicky switch
  • You’re new to mechanical keyboards and want a safer first pick

One genuine caveat before buying browns: if you already know you want strong tactile feedback, skip them entirely. Browns are a fine middle-ground, not a satisfying tactile. Spend the extra few cents per switch on a Gateron Brown (slightly more pronounced bump, better value) or save up for a U4T or Holy Panda if you want to feel what tactile actually means in this hobby.
